Town Centre Consultation?

Again, we're not alone. No, extra-terrestrial life has not been found yet!

I'm talking about 'consultation' the buzzword of both the national executive and our local councils or more accurately the lack of it.

Grangemouth La Porte Precinct

In the Falkirk Herald (01/02/07) it was reported that "the public consultation on Grangemouth's £22 million town centre regeneration came to an angry conclusion this week".

Over 90 per cent of the 621 who took part said they wanted town centre improvements, and more consultation.

One retailer said: "When are you going to consult the retailers? No one has talked to us about this development." "We are selling off the family silver once again," said another.

Falkirk Council Response

Douglas Duff, Falkirk Council's head of economic development, said "The scheme will change and it will be better thanks to your comments. We will take back ideas and use the information to help shape the final scheme. We hope this will allow you to get a better town centre.

Where have we heard this before?

At least in this instance environment and heritage committee convener Councillor Bob Spears said: "I tend to agree the consultation has been a bit rushed. I don't think we're getting a correct reflection of what the people want.

I wonder if the conciliatory tone has anything to do with another rapidly approaching 'consultation'?
